The reasons to be thankful just keep coming. . .a Californian cat named “Fat Boy” and his family must have hearts full of gratitude today.  This black and white feline was rescued this week from the very top of a 45 foot high power pole in Fresno, CA.  He had been stuck on that pole for 9 days!  His owner, Andrew Perez, had no idea how he got up there but speculates that it was probably a neighborhood dog that scared him up the pole.

“We were calling his name, and he was looking at us, and he’d just meow,” Perez said.  The fire department was called and they were able to get the Pacific Gas and Electric power company to get involved.  “It’s not a simple thing to climb a power pole and get a cat down,” PG&E spokesman Denny Boyles said. “The first thing we have to do is de-energize the line – it’s a 12,000-volt line. The safety of the two guys who went up on the pole, and the crew member on the ground, has to be our first priority every time.”

Usually, the power company just waits out cats that climb their poles.  Eventually the felines come down on their own.  But Fat Boy was up their so long, somebody had to take some action.  The company shut off power to 250 homes for a few hours to rescue the cat.

Fat Boy seemed to be healthy after his 9 day ordeal.  Veterinary workers gave him electrolytes and some food before returning him to his family.  They all must have had a pretty good Thanksgiving.  Now to deal with that pesky neighborhood dog. . .
