In India the father of the bride is responsible for paying for his daughter’s wedding. If a girl has lost her father or if the family is very poor, she has very little chance of ever getting married. The ritual of giving away one’s daughter in marriage is called “kanyadaan,” and it is a cherished tradition. Savani couldn’t bear the thought of so many young women from impoverished communities being deprived of such a glorious moment.

So this diamond tycoon came to the rescue in Gujarat this past weekend. He paid for and performed “kanyadaan” in the weddings of well over 200 young women, including the brides of his own two sons.

Mahesh Savani said that being able to do this for the women was a blessing from God. And it is not the first time he has done this. . .”With Sunday’s mass wedding, I have become a proud father to have performed the kanyadaan of over 700 girls,” he said.

News stations covered the ceremony with helicopters showing the decorated grounds, the colorful saris and massive number of guests. Savani also gave the brides over $7,000 worth of gifts including gold, sofas and beds.

He started this mission in 2008 after one of his employee’s died just days before his daughter’s wedding. Now he organizes massive weddings for hundreds that include sumptuous feasts, decorated horses, bands and dancers.

This father to the fatherless must be one of the beloved men in the world!
